Re: 308 surplus ammo
The 'Rinco milsurp is decent ammo. Quite hot but works great. I've managed sub MOA groups regularly and I've shot out to 700m with good results. Some guys have managed to ring steel out to 1000m. I would happily use it for plinking within 500m since its cheaper per round than only the bullets I use for my reloads.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
Whilst Norinco steel ammo does go bang and is reasonably accurate it is filthy stinky stuff. This may not be a concern if you love cleaning guns. Depending on the rifle it may help to end your shoot with a few decent rounds of PMP or S&B to blow some of the rubbish out. It is affordable for 308 so has some merit.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
if you have a license for .308win then you may legally be in possession of 7.62x51 as the cartridge can be fired in a 308win. In fact I own a 7.62 x 51 and have no problem buying .308 Ammo on that license. The differences between the two, to the extent that they exist at all, are so minimal that you will not notice them. The only difference I have found is that the twist of military rifles is often different to that of .308 hunting rifles, making them less suited to heavier bullets - the military cartridge having been optimised around approx 150gr.
You do however have to be careful about loading full house hunting loads in some military weapons as some were not designed to work with such heavy loads. This is not a problem in any bolt action I have ever come across.

Re: 308 surplus ammo
Note though that if in possession of South African miltary/Saps ammo then you may have a problem explaining how you came to get it as it may not be sold legally.
