Re: Screw size
Treeman it all depends on the screw and the quantity, like I said I normally order screws from them that is very hard to find locally so it is difficult to make a comparison. The price in my experience will be lower than the screws from the rings manufacturer.

Re: Screw size
The screws from the rings fit the receiver for the obvious reason that they are the same size. So why didn't you measure them before buying screws that don't fit ? And why would you think that an American product would have metric screws ? The US determinedly refuses to recognise that metric even exists, and is the only country that persists with the convoluted and illogical imperial (British) system of measurement. All or almost all scope bases and rings are US made or made to suit the US market. Most rifle receivers and scope bases and rings are therefore tapped for 6 x 48 screws, though a few are tapped 8 x 40. Indeed, a few US gunsmiths have enlarged holes in receivers and scope bases to 8 x 40 for more strength. Its a good modification in my opinion because 6 x 48 screws are small.
6 x 48 Means No 6 x 48 threads per inch. No 6 = 0.138 inch. What that means is 0.138 inch diameter x 48 threads per inch. It is VERY close to 3.5 x 0.50 metric fine but not exactly the same. I forget the exact diameter of No 8 but the 8 x 40 is very close to 4 x 0.60 metric but not exactly the same. If I were increasing the diameter of a 6 x 48 hole I wouldn't hesitate to tap it 4 x 0.60 metric.
You won't find such small US screws at any nut and bolt supplier or even at specialist engineering dealers. For that matter you'll be lucky to find metric fine screws. The logical place to look for scope screws is indeed firearm dealers some of whom might have a couple of those assorted screw kits that we can get from Brownells. But why not stop struggling and order one of those kits - they are not expensive.
