What dyes are you using for your anodizing? Obtained from where?
One of my favorite steels for machinability is Bohler M200, but not for price! Unfortunately the standard caustic steel blackenning solution does not work well on it.
So, I get a beautifully machined part, with lousy blackenning!
EN36 is an absolute dream to machine. Threads were turned at 175 rpm and, despite the slow speed, turned out very well. I would have to be really desperate to turn anything out of mild steel again.

I must admit, I have never tried Bohler M200, so cannot compare.

Anodizing was professionally done, so have no idea as to what dye was used. Sorry.

    Thanks
I'll bug my local supplier for some EN36. Sounds like the cost is reasonable.
    Does it blacken properly?

To be honest, the parts for the L.I.D. in the photos in my first post on this thread were blackened by heating them until they started to discolour, and then dunking them in some old full synthetic engine oil. I purposely left another part out in the back yard in the weather and rain for about 3 weeks without it showing a single speck of rust.

You got exceptionally good results, or the camera lied.
