Default SAC '06 Webley Mk IV

    Hi folks
So a fellow collector from Norway recently sent me a few pics of what appears to be a South African Constabulary .455 Mk IV
and he had the following to say..:

''I see on different forums that there are quite a few of these SAC Mk IVs lying around.
Like mine all I've seen has been reissued to another unit, mostly different police
and prison departments, but also military units.
Sadly I haven't been able to id this South African unit yet. Any ideas?''

I wonder how this got to Norway???

CorditeCrazy and Vratvark are two members that may be able to give more info for you...

I also had one, it is a wonderfully smooth gun and beautifully made. Mine was also marked to SAC as well as UDF and SAP.

I was a fool for letting mine go

Nice find, yes Tobie’s is a gem and In pristine condition. I wonder if the C.A would be Cape Artillery? Im not sure what the I. R would be for. If it’s in Europe it’s possible that it traveled the stores of the empire during WW1 or 2 and got issued out of SA. That being said the Union Marks are not crossed out so who knows.

I think Infantry Regiment. The number 24 is a mistery though.

I was also thinking along those lines, but infantry is usually marked SAI.

    Might be Irish Regiment?

Nothing in Tylden's book with only I.R

Thanks Tobie. Sure is a pity you got rid of yours.
If any of you guys up North should ever come across any nice or interesting
old shooters like Webley, Enfield, Mauser or anything SA military/ history related
that you're not gonna purchase, please be sure to let me know?

The current owner of this Webley said he bought it from a collector and that it's
been there for at least the past 20yrs that he knows of..

The SAC did not exist in the Cape; only OFS and Transvaal. My belief is that it is Civil (or possibly Colonial) Administration.

When the previous firearms act came into force, all firearms without serial numbers were allocated WR numbers as far as I know. Isn't it possible that government departments had different numbering sequences and that IR24 came from there?
