Jip, was talking about 5.56 NATO. Just had the decimal wrong (without a 0 before the decimal).

    The "points" in life. Sigh...

5.56 NATO is not the Metric of .223

5.56 NATO loaded to much higher pressure. I know of a few .223 proofmarked hunting rifles that has burned crowns and no more lands because they are shooting a lot of military surplus 5.56 NATO. You can use .223 in a 5.56 NATO proofed rifle but not the other way around is recommended.

The above reference to higher pressure is only true for certain specific (heavy bullet) loads. The local and most other 55gn 5,56mm loads are usually quite safe in 223 rifles.

If the ammo produces excessive pressures in a rifle, the damage is more of a structural nature, like damaged locking lugs or extruded case heads.

Burnt out barrels are usually the result of high volumes, not high pressure. If they shot "a lot" of factory 223 ammo, the damage (wear) would likely be just the same.

Jip. The chambers also differ a really small bit. 5.56 NATO in a .223 Chamber can push the pressure up to even more than 65 000 PSI. .223 Rem is running at about 50 000 - 55 000 if I remember correctly. Stand to be corrected on the precise pressure figures.

Adoons - the argument is so old and so many guys use 5.56 ammo, the Yanks buy it by the case Mil Surp (Military Surplus ) sold in a few thousand round ammo box's. Yes it is in theory possible to damage a .223 with mil ammo, but so is it possible to do with a bad reload or corroded round. Other than some form of special purpose Mil round the standard Nato cartridge is not going to damage your rifle. I am pretty sure that the USA ( Americans Sue Anything) would have a string of cases for injury loss of life and damage to property cases by now - every case of mil surp ammo would have a clear warning on 6 sides and 3 languages Not Safe For Use in Civilian .223 rifles. Of this I am certain.
