Re: The price of a braai
I don't like pap at a braai, not at all, I never understood why people do it.
It's also not very popular among the farming communities where I grew up, you would see more town or city folk do it, hence I never understood the custom.
But we all do our own things, the english mash and wors makes a lot more sense for me personally :)

I love pap. Krummelpap made with yellow mealie meal, for breakfast.
But I agree, pap and sous with a braai has never been a hit for me.Last edited by Skaaphaas; 20-07-2019 at 10:08.

Re: The price of a braai
Pap has - to the best of my knowledge - a twofold origin in SA.
Firstly, there are diaries from the Ango-Boer War where the Boers describe how they started making pap from the maize flower taken from British troops. Also, and I take it as a byproduct of the ABW, pap is said to have been more popular in the Free State and Transvaal provinces, whereas Natal and the Cape preferred bread or other meals for breakfast.
Secondly it is said to be a derivative of porridge, which was brought into the country by English missionaries.
If anyone knows more or better I would be grateful to have the info.

I also like to stock up in bulk. My supplier is running short at the moment but I pay R15 for a bag of very dry wood when he has stock.
Last night I only used 1 pack because I used my indoor braai as the wind was unpleasant. Most of the time I braai in my boma. Will easily use 3 packs of wood where 2 of them are only used for pre and post braai atmosphere!

Re: The price of a braai
The concept of cooking grains into a porridge or a krummel-pap from cereal-grains is older concept than bread. Bigger question is probably what did we make/grill first on that first fire, meat or pap.
The first Portuguese explorers were the ones that introduced maize to Africa through trade and was widely cultivated African tribes and used as part of their staple diet along with other grains when the VOC arrived.
Also that we use the Dutch word pap and that meals like sweet ontbijtpap and savoury bierpap have been made in the Netherlands since before the colonial era although they probably used wheat instead of maize I think is a good indication that pap has been here since Jan stepped unto the shores.
