Default The price of a braai

When talking braaing, it’s often synonymous with south african leisure activity.
When you ask many people what they are doing on a Friday or Saturday, braaing would be it.

However one would be fooled into thinking the activity which holds such an appeal is also economical.
The fact is precious few people discuss the realities of the costs involved, it’s basically very expensive to braai for several people. You must buy the wood(can braai with charcoal but not kuier), you have to buy the meat, you have to buy bykosse(for the woman), snacks for the kids, and the drinks, oh boy.

If you do this every weekend then you must surely know what it costs by now, that is if you are the kind of person who worries about money. So without asking what you guys prefer to eat or drink, when braaing for the family what is the normal amount you guys spent on the day for that specific endeavour, more or less?

It is easily R1000, if you take all the crap that gets attached to the braai

You cannot put a price on a family braai.

About pap, I was under the impression that the Dutch (Netherlands) pap is different to the Afrikaaner pap which has Malay influence.

We do not put a price on what we enjoy, it is our personal fun factor.

Having said that, braai for us is usually a very simple dinner as well.

We don't braai often, simply due to work hours. When we do it is no big thing, I simply throw something from the fridge onto the fire. The exception to the rule is when the family visits, then we usually get a skaapribbetjie (translate that!), good venison cuts and some good wine. We do often not eat snacks etc, but chocolate and whiskey or epresso afterwards is a must.

    Some other thoughts:
My grandfather used to say that, if he ever were to do a Doctor's degree, it would be on the braai culture in South Africa. I heard a rumour that someone did exactly that during the late 1990's.

Another fellow once commented: "I braai three times a week, and on weekends as well."

    Few questions:

    - How often have you grilled in the fireplace? We often have a small fire going in winter, it works a charm with a small folding grill
    - Has anyone grilled avo?
