Advice on an old H&R 12ga
Hi guys
I need some advice on an old Harrington and Richards Standard 12ga. It is a single shot takedown model in working order. Serial number in the range B2****
I inherited it form my grandfather and it has been standing in my safe for nearly 17 years. The time for re-licencing is at hand and I am wondering if it is worth it. The licence must be renewed before
2019-10-06.
So, my questions: Is this worth anything? Is there a market for something like this? Any info would be appreciated.

I don't think you'd get more than about R750 if you sold it. H&R not exactly sought after, especially in single shot format.

AFAIK they are still in production. Last time I looked the firm was called H&R1875 or something similar.
This is a no-frills working shotgun. Monetary value is low, but if it is a family heirloom, the value is not measured in Rands.
I have my grandfathers S/S shotgun in my safe. There is some serious wear and neglect, but I renew the license and oil it occasionally. I like the fact that I have something that he used a lot and managed to cling on to, despite difficult times for gun owners during WW2. All civilian guns were supposed to be handed to the state at the time, but he hid it where the regime could not find it...

Yours still look pretty good condition! It will mever turn into a collectors item, but keep it. Why not.
A lot of them (all of them?) have serious extraction problems, but just keep a 70x10 mm piece of brass rod in your pocket to throw in from the muzzle side and hit out the spent cartridge and shoot it.
My dad had one in pretty bad shape that we had a lot of use for. He swopped it for a bottle of brandy when he was 16. Heirloom stuff. Keep it

Buy some no 7 shotgun cartridges and take the old lady for a stroll. Then decide whether you truly want to get rid of her.

Re: Advice on an old H&R 12ga
I have one. Once a year I take it to shoot quail or as Ds J said I take it when I stroll in the veld. It is not worth anything in money but... I would hate the idea to hand it in to the cops for destruction. Just keep it and go shoot with it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am under no illusions regarding collectors value, its never going to happen.
Giving it in is just morally wrong, so that is not an option. I will re-licence. At least that gives me 10 more years to decide what to do with it

Re: Advice on an old H&R 12ga
There is a version with a rifled barrel that I don’t know why but I like the idea of it.
I had a scope rail mounted on mine. I managed to get MOA with slugs at 100meters with mine with a smooth barrel and a 3-9 scope. But as you move further its gets worse quicker.
