    Just to add.

I went to Herbst Knife making academy in May, and it was beyond amazing.
I would love one of their grinders because it takes 5 minutes to sharpen a knife, but I all ready have an expensive hobby so I cant justify buying a rig just for sharpening...

Is a little belt sharpener like this the next best thing?

Want to sharpen all my knives from kitchen to EDC, victorinox to spyderco....

Have not used it ,but I d a lot of sharpening on a belt. A belt can get a edge quick. It can overheat the steel. It can ruin a blade very fast even with jigs. expect to lose a lot of material (blade life)

Depending on your needs it may do exactly what you need if you are experienced or not.

For kitchen knives I have recently started to use a carbide and ceramic sharpener. It's quick and restores an edge in seconds. Especially useful when the knife is blunt (to my liking) every few days. Beats running t the workshop a few times a week. Now I redress the edge every few months.

    I have one.

It keeps the kitchen knives razor sharp, but it does take off quite a bit of metal.

It has a much sorter learning curve than learning to use stones.

That being said, I will definitely buy a decent set of sharpening stones over this when finances allow.

Basically, yes they work. Fast and efficient for everyday jobs on tools you don't care much about, or replace often. As stated, they remove a lot of material; I have seen knives develop a "fish belly" appearance from being sharpened on belts by indelicate hands. If you have special knives, or need them really sharp, or want to use them for many years to come, or enjoy a proper cutting edge - basically any reason except for a fast edge on a piece of replacable sharpened steel - I would get a wetstone or something else which is less harsh on metal.

I own one and use it quite a bit. Once I have formed the edge on any knife with this machine I never use the medium grit belt on that knife again unless the edge gets damaged. By only using the fine polishing belt to maintain edges you don't take off much material at all.

If you own knives with so-called "super" steel blade material for example M390 there really is no better way to get and maintain an edge than this. Almost all my hunting knives have S30V blades and trust me when I say they can be an absolute ball-ache to sharpen even when using diamond stones.

Thanks for the advise guys, so this does work but quite harshly?

Would it be better to get the spyderco sharpmaker to keep my edc knives and kitchen knives sharp? Because of the longer blade life and less chances of messing up a blade?

2 mins and you have a razor sharp blade. My father in law has one of these. They work a treat. Just have to be careful with the coarse belts.
