Default Some advice for those who has/wants to remain behind.

Apologies if this thread must rather be in the Small Talk section. If so, please can a Mod assist.

So after following the NHI thread and the "Where to" Immigration thread, I thought of discussing what about those that can't jump ship ?

What advice do you give to someone who can't immigrated for reasons X,Y and Z ?

In 2012 I contemplated the idea. NZ seemed like the only place that would accept my skills. I had to pay NZ$ 500 for skills transition but I never followed through. Before you judge me, I have several valid reasons I can't immigrate.

I know there are many others, perhaps on GS too that can't jump ship.

So what do we do ? I'm a casual Prepper if you want to put it that way but we all know this is a temporary solution.

I want a future for my son. He is in Gr 1 and I sulk when thinking what opportunities he will have in 12 year's time.

Following this Killzone. We cannot leave due to various reasons. At seventy years of age and on a police pension the future doesn't look promising. We now have a very good medical aid but it seems we will lose it under the NHI.

It's bad Mr 357, really bad. I drive a 13 year old car but I always had reassurance that my medical aid is much more worth than a new vehicle or other luxuries. But now the future looks so bleak...

My advice, don't stick your head in the sand but also don't wallow in the negativity and avoid those who can only talk about how bad things are - there are plenty of them around (on GS too). There are plenty good things, you're alive, own a few firearms probably, can still practice your religion without persecution, have a roof over your head. If you can't see an "out" and want to live under a cloud, so be it. If you're staying here and would like things to change, take action and get involved. Vote, march, make your voice heard to those that need to hear it. Moaning to your friends around a fire or on GS certainly won't change things.

We had this conversation around a fire last night, "stuck" here because of family/business interests etc etc. Make the most of what you've got.

Every country you want to go to is full of leech's from continent you leaving and yet you told you can not immigrate because of age - skills - what ever.
I looked into going to Ausi land - build a place on brothers land and just carry on working like I do here - NO WAY, not allowed in.

In a similar boat, wife's health makes going almost impossible, my skills don't really transfer so here we are here we stay.

Try to focus on the positive be it job, family, hobbies or wonderful area you live in.
    Prep:
Have the legal limit of ammo per firearm, have a basic first aid kit, always good to have enough non perisable food for a few weeks (dried beans, peas, rice, flour, pasta, baking supplies, biltong and dry wors) and a supply of water (if the munusipal water is off) is never a bad idea, propane and propane stove/braai always work, if you can keep your cars full of fuel that also helps. You will never regret having a supply of toiletpaper (we had issues in town a few weeks ago when the shops were closed for almost a week, alot of people ran out).
That said the odds are you won't ever need the things you stock up on for prepping, so its a good idea if it is stuff the you usually use.

    Start reading, then start doing.

What happened in Indonesia during the riots in the late 90's, and during the Balkan wars.

What happened in Zim after Mugabe took over.

Ask yourself what is necessary to sustain life: water, food, medication, firearms etc.

Try to prepare yourself for almost any situation.

Remember that we have a socialist/marxist government. Go read up about the changes in South American countries after socialist takeovers. That might give us an idea. Still, we do not know what is coming. It may be a steady decline into utter poverty, or it may be sudden upheavals and then maybe a chance to get things right in the aftermath.

Keep your mind and senses together, don't panick and do what you can.

And start praying. We are going to need it.

A few things too consider in no specific order............

Relocate to an area which has folks in a same position as you. Secured gated community if possible. Form a neighbourhood watch, train together. Teach everyone in your home to defend themselves.

NHSA dedicated status. Not a perfect solution but a big help.

There are pro's and cons of being in or near a big city but I think its safer in the long run, as access to services and backup is better.

Jojo tanks, solar panels, generator and all other precautions to make you as independent as possible to critical infrastructure failure.

Move spare cash into a Rand hedge like Gold or USD denominated investments. Erosion of the Rand value will be devastating.

Get healthy. Do everything you can to reduce your need for chronic meds and treatment. If you are on chronic meds try and keep a 6-12 month stockpile.

Keep your passport up to date, you never know when getting one becomes a problem.
Also acquire essential documents. Marriage certificate, Birth Certificate and original deeds to properties. You never know when you may need them and can't get them.

And whatever you do, don't work on an assumption that you will have a firearm in the future. Because that doesn't fit with the ANC's likely plans.
