Default AK side mount-what to look for?

    Hey everyone

I'm considering a side mount for my Saiga 223 and would appreciate any advice on what I should look for before purchasing one. I am either planning on mounting a variable scope or red dot, but have not yet decided.

    1) What should I consider/ look for in a side mount?

    2) What is available in South Africa and where should I start looking?

    3) Is there any gold standard (available in SA) among these things or are they mostly on par?

    TIA

I don’t have much advice, except to say I went with a cheapy and I’m regretting it. Cheap ones are heavy and bulky.

    QUICK detatch

I have the bolt on style and it's a bitch, at least I've figured out a way to remove the bolt with it still on (its low)

    AK mastermount is godd

As far as I'm concerned UTG and Ncstar, is airsoft stuff.

Thanks for the input, for interest how good are the cheaper ones holding zero?

Any idea on who might stock the detach ones. The only one I can seem looking on the web is the UTG Pro in SA that has these

Have a utg Pro on mine. It was skew out of the box

Took some coercing but eventually got it straight

2 wooden crates of ammo later (around 2800 rounds I think it is, maybe 3000 rounds) holding zero

Its held Zero well for nearly 3 years, its when you have to remove and refit that issues occur.

So far it seems that this is the best option of the ones I have seen in SA. I would still look a bit around though.

Do you have to rezero it, like the one griffin mentioned, when it is put on and off again?

    Never taken mine off

I can remove the dust cover without removing the mount, so haven't tested whether it will be a "Wanderin' Zero" or not :-)
