Default Competency to supervise shooting exercises "SASSETA RO"

A couple of years back I did my U/S 123516, which is the Proficiency training to be a formally SASSETA qualified Range Officer. I was duly issued with course completion certificate, statement of results & a laminated card that states I am a SASSETA qualified RO. The card is not a Competency Card as issued by CFR and it has never been suggested that it is any way a replacement for or equivalent to a CFR-issued competency card but it has been good enough for anything I have needed.

Anyway, I was going to see my DFO for something else so I decided to try applying for a CFR additional competency as an RO and see what happens.

Well, we couldn't even load it onto the system because the system does not allow for a Competency Card for U/S 123516 to be requested. In other words, it is "impossible" for one to get a competency card/certificate to prove competency for being an RO.

There is a drop-down menu, limiting the choice of competencies to:
    - Competency to own a firearm
    - Competency to be a gunsmith
    - Competency to be a dealer

and 2 or 3 others that escape me right now.

So, my question is: Has anyone else ever tried to apply for RO Competency, and if so what happened?

ROs are regulated by either ITA or PTFC, they have nothing to do with owning or taking responsibility for a firearm arm and so have no category in the FCA, which is a good thing.

Not only a good thing, but the Unit Standard has nothing to do with sports shooting associations. We do not want any more interference from the money making security industry.

What were you trying to achieve here to begin with?

Being an RO has nothing to do with the CFR.

RO status is granted by individual organisation's after the person has undergone the necessary training. Although firearm safety is universal, the disciplines of handgun, rifle, shotgun and semi-auto rifle each have different controls in place to ensure safety in the drills or exercises that are shot.

At the risk of repeating myself:

You are not incorrect, but I think you might have missed some of the detail in my post.

I did U/S 123516, which requires attending a course, writing an exam & doing a practical, same as proficiency courses to own a handgun/rifle/shotgun. There are other proficiencies too:

U/S 117705 – Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60/2000
    U/S 119649 – Handle and use a handgun
    U/S 119650 – Handle and use a self-loading rifle or carbine
U/S 119651 – Handle and use a manually operated rifle or carbine
    U/S 119652 – Handle and use a shotgun
U/S 123510 – Apply tactical knowledge in the use of firearms
U/S 123511 – Handle and use a self-loading rifle or carbine for business purposes
    U/S 123512 – Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a shotgun
    U/S 123513 – Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a handgun
U/S 123514 – Handle and use a shotgun for business purposes
U/S 123515 – Handle and use a handgun for business purposes
U/S 123516 – Supervise Shooting Exercise (Range Officer)
U/S 123517 – Supervise the operation of a shooting range and tactical shooting exercises
    U/S 123518 – Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a self-loading rifle or Carbine
U/S 123519 – Handle and use a manually operated rifle or carbine for Business purposes
    U/S 123520 – Supervise firearm training
    U/S 243200 – Handle and use a muzzle-loading firearm

For most of these courses, the system doesn't allow for an application for competency to be loaded onto the system.

There's no such thing as a 'competency to be an RO'. Only the unit standard exists...just as there's no such thing as a competency for Handle and Use for Business Purposes, only the US exists.

That course qualifies you to be an RO on a public range.
Like I said, it has nothing to do with the cfr.
Back to my question, what were you trying to achieve?
A competency deals with your fitness to use a firearm or trade in firearms.
An RO doesn't need to posses a firearm to perform his duties, so what would cfr deem you competent for then.
