DIY kydex holsters
I saw the thread from ror123 with the link to openmolds http://www.gunsite.co.za/forums/show...97#post1337197 and it got me thinking, how difficult would it be to create my own custom holsters for my firearms, mags and knives? The supplies appear to be cheap enough from openmolds.
I've read through a few articles like this one http://survival-mastery.com/diy/weap...x-holster.html, and it appears to be doable, it would obviously have a steep learning curve to it. I am quite handy and love tinkering with these sort of things. I have 2 locally produced kydex holsters, that are awesome, but I need two or three more in the coming months when I get the licenses.
Has anyone tried to DIY it before? Is it one of those things that appear to be easy and then just ends up being a complete ball ache?

Re: DIY kydex holsters
Many people seem to do them themselves.
Very, very few seem to do them well.
By well, I mean properly finished and aesthetically pleasant.
I think specialised stuff like AIWB may have a steeper curve

Re: DIY kydex holsters
I like DIY and have done it for knives and torches with PVC pipe, the temp is lower , but the rest is pretty much the same.
I cut a pice of pipe open, pop it in the oven at about 100ºc and when it is floppy you mould it around whetever you want to. The PVC is not strong enough for regular use, but you can practice with it. and make good light duty stuff with it.
The first couple you do may not be as nice as you would like, but it is possible.

Re: DIY kydex holsters
I have done it a few times, I even built a press to do it properly, its fun, gets old quick though because the experts do it so much better...

Re: DIY kydex holsters
On the one hand, DIY is often huge fun and one can enjoy the fruit of his labour with pride. On the other hand, there is a reason why professionally made kydex holsters are not cheap. If you are in a hurry and in need of something good, rather pay for someone else's experience. The school fees on such projects together with the time are usually more expensive than buying a finished and properly made item.If you have sufficient time, then go ahead and dig it.

Ok, you've convinced me to rather stay away for now. Thanks for the input.

Re: DIY kydex holsters
I would like to know what temps as well. I have a handmade holster (made by a member here, actually, many moons ago) and the shell is of ABS plastic. It has cracked now three times already. First two times I managed to fix it, but the last time I broke a part and I can't fix it, so I need a new shell. Would LOVE to try my hand at making my own. Those sheets are cheap enough.
