    Buy a cheap thread gauge, looks like a feeler gauge except each blade has a thread pitch cut in it.

    ^^ That's the most accurate method, mixing 9/16 NF against 14X1 may cause a bit of tail chasing.

    Adendorf if you have one near enough.

    I would say that 15.875 is M16, as male threads are always undercut.

    Remember that pipe is nominal bore (NB) so you measure the I/D (inside diameter), not the O/D (outside diameter).

    If you want a muzzle break, you don't need any expensive stuff. Just whack it with something heavy. Eventually it will break...

    For adding a brake, you may need a proper thread.

    Some indication of the origin of the thread may help quite a bit to narrow down the options. Most factory threaded barrels have known thread specs. If it was added later, a thread pitch guage is the best tool for the job.

    It was aftermarket cut, I'll go get a measuring tool at Adendorf.
