LM4 Charging Handle issue
Evening All..
Anyone did a scope modification on the LM4? Mainly this involves replacing the original dust cover with one that has been modified to accept scope mounts.
I am experiencing 2 problems...
1) The Charging handle may strike mounts/scope upon cycling (firing)
2) Nuckles and Fingers get banged up on mounts/scope/receiver upon chambering the first round and making safe and the like..
Only solution I see is maybe a slightly extended 90deg Charging handel?
Any tips or ideas would be appreciated..
PS. It's not one of the recently stolen R4s HAHA. Been shooting it for years with the peep sight think it's time for an upgrade.
Regards
Frans

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
A good gunsmith will heat up the charging handle and bend it out slightly

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
Check out the website link, I gather something of the sorts to assist you with your issue.
Pricing is a tad steep but you may possibly find a similar alternative option along the same lines.

What sport shooting are you doing? You may have to work within the rules of the sport.

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
I would not recommend a dustcover-mounted scope on the LM or any other AK derivative. The reason is that the dustcover can never really be attached without wobbling a little. This may be good enough for mounting a RDS, but not solid enough for a scope.
There are several scope mounting systems for the LM rifles. These are the same as for the Galil rifles, since the 2 are basically the same thing. Most common are side mounts, that are drilled and tapped into the left side of the receiver and a railmount that sits on the barrel or barrel and front of receiver.
Have a look around for what is available that will suit your needs.
There are 2 mods for the charging handle:
You can mount an extra lever that clamps onto the existing lever at a 90 degree angle. It is removable if you want to.
You can have the handle heated and bent 90 degrees to the right. Works as well, but is permanent.
If you look around you may be able to find a bolt carrier with bent handle for sale or swop.

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
The charging handle on the combat rifles is heated and bend outwards. The scope mounts used on them is mounted to the reciever. The site on the dust cover os removed, the holes welded up and the cover is re blued.

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
I used the military style dustcover for my LM5 with a red dot for 3 gun shoots for a very long time. At the back of the dustcover was 2 allenscrews that made sure the dustcover always locks in the same position. It was good up to 150 m.
There was still enough gap to grab the charging handle between thumb and index finger.

Re: LM4 Charging Handle issue
The small red dots ie Trijicon rmr etc are viable. Anything else get an AR. Yes it has been done and Armscor did produce specialised dust covers for scopes with proprietary mounts (I think for night vision) but there are now far better options. As for side mounting I recall being told that this was tried but abandoned due to issues.
