Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
On this note but a little side track.
I had a nightmare a couple of months ago. I walked to my safe and opened it and my guns where rusted to bits (looked like those WW2 guns they dig from the mud)
Hell I woke in one hell of a cold sweat !!
So since then I open my save every week to inspect my guns and oil the sh&$*t out of them

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
Slight divergence
Does this also happen with SS firearms ?
I know that they are stainless and not meant to rust -- BUT ....
SS rifle with a laminated stock = end of problems ?

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
Dont want to disappoint you. But Stainless Steel can rust.
Depending on its composition. Chromium in it makes it resistant to rust.
But if they less of it to save on costs. You get rust.
Also Stainless Steel is suppose to be non magnetic.
Yet you get Stainless steel Tumbling pins that cling to magnets.
Which means its of weaker structure.

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
Stainless steel stains less. It is not stain free...
Most stainless steel alloys contain primarily Chrome, Nickel and Iron. Nickel and Iron are both magnetic materials. So, many stainless steels will cling to a magnet. 304 Stainless that is commonly used for tumbler media and automotive exhaust pipes is attracted by magnets. This has absolutely nothing to do with the strength of it's molecular (or other) structure.

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
In actual fact 304 and 316 and all other Stainless steel do "rust".
Stainless need to be pickled and passivated to initiate "its protective ability" against corrosion.
Without pickling stainless does not have its inherent ability to protect against corrosion.
The pickling and passivation is induced corrosion that makes stainless "corrosion" resistant.
I know it sounds crazy...but dont believe stainless cant rust. It has to rust to protect itself.

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
Should the statement not be, "usable stainless", stainless that does not rust is too soft for most uses ?

Re: Guns Rusting in Safe
No stainless steel need Chromium oxide to be corrosion resistant and has little to do with how hard or soft it is.
Chromium oxide is the initial oxidation layer post fabrication and machining that makes Stainless steel resistant to corrosion.
With pickle and passivation this layer is "forced" onto the stainless.
Stainless, how super duper one expect it to be has drawbacks... and a long discussion on its own.
The long and short is SS can corrode/erode.
