Re: Police discover illegal ammunition cache at Durban house
Police are searching for a Durban man wanted for allegedly harbouring hundreds of different types of ammunition, bullet reloading equipment, gun powder and fake passports in the basement of a house.
In a statement on Thursday, police said a team of police officers and members of the Hawks discovered various types of ammunition at a house in Evans Road, Umbilo, on Wednesday.
“Earlier yesterday the sheriff of the court requested the presence of the police as he was to evict the person who has occupied the house without paying rent.
“It is alleged that when the police and sheriff visited the house in Umbilo, the person that was to be evicted was not present.
“According to the statement, the domestic worker was in the house and while the sheriff was busy taking property out of the house, police made the discovery.
“A total of 668 various types of ammunition, 3,840 bullet casings, gun powder and three fake passports were discovered in the basement. A rifle was also recovered.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the illegal occupant of the house, whose identity is known to SowetanLIVE's sister publication TimesLIVE, was previously charged for possession of explosives and ammunition and was out on bail.
“A case of failing to safeguard ammunition has been opened for investigation at Umbilo SAPS. The suspect is sought by police,” the statement read.

How exactly do you 'harbour' 'hundreds of different types' of ammunition?
Was the dude giving them a safe shelter from storms or something? And exactly how many 'hundred' of 'different types' can there really be?
The usual standard of reporting, both by the media and police.

Single mother Shelley le Tourneur has been fighting a five-year battle to evict the first man after he had said that he intended to buy her home while he was a tenant, but he “knew every trick” to avoid making any payments.
Durban - The man alleged to have hoarded guns and ammunition in a Glenwood house could be wanted in the US.
Karl Sander, a detective with the Hawks, told the Independent on Saturday it was still to be confirmed.
However, the suspect also allegedly had a history of money laundering and fraud cases against him in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
He faced illegal arms and ammunition cases in 2013 and 2016, the latter being linked to the same Evans Road house from which he was evicted last week.
Sander said he believed the man was consulting his lawyers.
He was not arrested by yesterday evening.
Sander confirmed the police charged another man for failing to safeguard a .303 rifle, also found in the house, or reporting it lost.
Single mother Shelley le Tourneur has been fighting a five-year battle to evict the first man after he had said that he intended to buy her home while he was a tenant, but he “knew every trick” to avoid making any payments.
She was finally granted an eviction order, which was executed on Wednesday.
The sheriff discovered a rifle and alerted the police.
Le Tourneur said she helped a police search that netted an illegal firearm, thousands of rounds of ammunition, bullet casings, gunpowder and fake passports.
“I helped by pointing out the hiding places. I had raised my children in the house so I knew all the hiding places,” she said.
Le Tourneur said that the eviction ordeal had broken her financially.
