Rifle caliber change with same barrel
Hi all,
I would like to have my 260 rem re chambered to a 6.5-284 keeping the same barrel? How long does it normally take and what is the process to follow?

Re: Rifle caliber change with same barrel
SAPS 531 form, in theory should be 5 months in total, can take two years.
Not sure the 260 will work, the bolt face is the same, but I suspect the 6.5-284 will need a long action, not a short action. I stand to be corrected though.

Re: Rifle caliber change with same barrel
I have been told that CFR does not allow me to rechamber my 458 WM into a 458 Lott.
I hope someone can tell me that they have come to their senses and it is allowed nowA roaring Lion kills no game

They were taken to court for being stupid regarding the changing barrels etc.
Another way, is get one of the local barrel makers to make you a new barrel, then licence just the barrel under a new 271.

Re: Rifle caliber change with same barrel
This is interesting, and something that I have considered in the past so I have already put some thought into it. I already have a few ideas but would be interested to hear what others think.
What are the implications of having having an action, stock, magazine, scope etc (ie fully functional firearm) attached to something that is licenced as a barrel only? I would expect that a "normal" rifle where the barrel is semi-permanently fixed to the action would be viewed differently from pump-action shotguns & rifles like the Blasers that are designed for barrel & calibre swaps without specialised tools & equipment but I'm not sure how & where they would draw the line in an official way.
Would one then have to carry both licences? If you have the "spare" barrel fitted to the action, does that mean that the rifle has 2 different licences simultaneously?
If the "spare" barrel has the same serial number as the "original" barrel it would be a lot easier, but I reckon that would be difficult to get right and you would probably still have a situation where the calibre stamped on the barrel might not correspond with what appears on the licence.
I understand that the barrel is the main licenceable component, but my understanding is also that an action by itself, being a major firearm component, requires a licence. If one can freely swap barrels on-and-off an action, it might imply that the action doesn't require a licence.
What do the experts out there think?

Re: Rifle caliber change with same barrel
Show licence with serial number on action. SAPS asks about barrel number. Show licence with barrel number. Complain to them about how you asked CFR to fix it and they gave you a second card. Technically you have legal licences for both.
