Re: Fixed blades - suggestions?
(I also posted this in the post iro AAR on SWAT-G's course by BigT on the Scenariois and Tactics Sub Forum.)
On knife carry as a serious secondary weapon I firmly believe in a FB with a folder for utility and back-up use.
I regularly carry a Shivworks Disciple http://www.shivworks.com/products.asp and find the system and the reverse edge knife deployment the fastest knife system into action and onto the target. There are different knives that can be used in this manner and one does not have to use the Disciple exclusively.
The system is also called the Draw Point Method and you can read more here of the simplicity and effectiveness of this system http://www.civilian-warrior-self-def...efighting.html.
Knife is carried appendix position edge in (= edge facing backwards towards the hip) and is available to both the right and left hand. On the Disciple the sheath can be set up to be for primary access for the left or the right hand.
Any knife that is compact enough to carry appendix position and allows for it to be gripped in the reverse edge method can be used.
I will happily let anyone use my Disciple Trainer to try the system and decide for themselves. Put it on the clock/timer and judge for yourself. I will be very interested in a knife system that is faster to deploy and striked on target.
The Shivworks system is also kiss which is a huge benefit imo to someone that does not regularly do active blade work. I do not intend to get into a knife fight and carry the knife as a serious secondary weapon for getting out of trouble.
I am sure someone like Harm can set up an affordable system like the "disciple".
See here for reverse edge use http://www.reknives.com/technique.html - it unfortunately does not display the speed of deployment.
This system is not to be confused with reverse grip edge forward which I personally do not like.
Some more info here http://www.themartialist.com/pecom/shivworks.htm.
You won't miss it unless you know what you are missing.

Re: Fixed blades - suggestions?
A nice very reasonably priced fixed blade knife that I have integrated into my 'EDC package' is the K-BAR TDI (model 1480) ... In my opinion this is an excellent, easily concealable, close quarters weapon worn on my off-side that deploys very easily and works very well in tandem with my glock.
So many awesome EDC weapons out there - PLENTY to choose from!“Practice Peace, Train Chaos!”
