Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Empty mags are dropped on the ground all the time.
Reloads are required in many stages.
Read the rules.Be ready for anything, and if his head is not at least two meters away from the body, do not 'assume' he is dead and out of the fight. - Ikor

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Read the rules. However, in the case of Tactical Reloads or Reload with Retention it seems people rather pocket the mag than drop it. Is it only dropped on slide lock (Emergency Reload), or every time? I'm confused now.

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Exactly. So mags do get dropped, not "never" as in your post.
Retaining the magazine on your person is a requirement for Tac reload/RWR.
Max rounds in magazines are 10 for ESP & SSP, and eight for CDP.
Courses of fire can have up to 18 shots required, therefore reloads are required often.
You can happily play along with your EDC mags, but it is better to have dedicated range mags due to the increased wear and tear.Be ready for anything, and if his head is not at least two meters away from the body, do not 'assume' he is dead and out of the fight. - Ikor

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Yeah I figured as much. I hate dropping a mag, specially since the base plates can get bendy and dust can be an issue. Eh. I'll just buy a few CZ mags for EDC and then use the cheaper, less smooth mags for IDPA shoots then. Until I can afford all-original mags, that is.
EDIT: Oh, and thanks for the info! I appreciate it!

Have you done the NSO? This should've been explained to you?

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Which is why I'm asking! I've not done anything yet. I've found the .pdf on Google, bookmarked it and I'll read it through when I get a bit of time, thanks!

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Shooting glasses, what work best? Clear, tinted or polarized? I used a pair of my polarized fishing glasses on my last club shoot (Not IDPA) recently and, unless it's all in the mind, I had a clearer target. Descent eye protection is on my "to buy" list, so some suggestions as to what, will save me from buying twice.
Where to buy a decent gun belt? I bought an expensive thick leather belt at a gun shop, it is now so stretched that it needs to be replaced. The two local shops (East Rand) does not have much to choose from.
If all goes well I'll do my NSO in Jan 2013, how well will it be expected of me to know the rules, some of the stuff is still a bit arcane to me, especially scoring. Hope it will make more sense as I start to participate.

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
Buy a CR Speed IDPA belt from pdh on the forums, or drive through to PTA and pick one up from Rescomp. I bought mine a few weeks ago, paid R175 and I've been wearing it every single day ever since. No longer do I need to super-strap the leather belt around my waist to keep my FA secure - the belt does all the work! It's epic for EDC wear, the only nasty thing is the noise the velcro makes when you take off the belt. EVERYONE knows then.

The second spare mag will probably be like a condom... Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Re: STICKEY: Equipment suggestions for New IDPA Shooters
As per Paladin, I'm also interested in shooting glasses. My contact lenses are far from optimal for just reading text, so wouldn't like to shoot with them in. As such, I'd be looking for prescription safety glasses. I assume a tint would be good, and I see Uvex make prescription safety glasses. Any recommendations for or against this?
