Police lost 1505 firearms 2012-14
Police officers have lost a total of 1505 firearms which were stolen from them in the past two years.
The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, revealed in Parliament that out of the firearms stolen only 184 were recovered by the police.
Mthethwa, who was replying to a written parliamentary question from ANC MP Thjeta Mofokeng yesterday, said a number of measures were taken to curb the loss of firearms.
Mofokeng, who chairs the select committee on security and constitutional development in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), also wanted to know the cause of this.
The minister said during the 2012-13 financial year a total of 834 police service pistols were lost while in the following financial year 671 guns were lost.
