Another gunshop rant - safety

If he could close both ears with one arm you need to tell him to give up being an instructor and move on to a great career as the circus freakshow.

One thing I have learnt is that the stories told over the counter of the gun shop make your average fisherman sound honest.

You can't really close both ears, but you can easily cover one ear with your bicep and stick a finger in the other. That's what he meant with "cover" - he actually demonstrated such.

As for fishing stories at gun counters - even if it was just a tall story, it is still not promoting a responsible attitude.

I'm a complete rookie - I'm still waiting for my SD license - so I might be making more of the situation than is warranted.

When I did my competency (at one of the smaller PTA gun shops) there were two things that bothered me:

1. I'm cross-eye dominant. When I shot with my right eye closed, the instructor told me in no uncertain terms that he would never allow any of his students to shoot cross-eyed. According to this thread, it seems as there is no clear consensus as to what is really better, and much is down to personal preference. I'm now wary of going back there, because I suspect that while their advice might work for most people, it will not necessarily be suited to the specific individual's situation.

2. Another instructor, at the same shop, told us how he fired his Glock while scuba diving. He regaled that the first shot burst both his eardrums (shock wave in the water), but he then proceeded to close his ears with one arm, and fired another shot. I really didn't like this attitude - surely you endanger your dive buddy as much as yourself. Scuba diving is dangerous enough as is, with squeeze and reverse squeeze very real concerns at depth. I've had reverse squeeze induced by sinus before, and I knew that I'm in trouble the moment I realized what happened. I assume that blood in your ear channel will be able to induce the same. Surely that is not the kind of attitude you want to instill in someone doing their competency?

1st shot about 10cm low barely on the paper, rest in/around the black.
