It sounds very noble to release fish after catching them. We do not know if they survive this strenious fight. This size of fish might be close to its end of life - similar to a trophy buck and has spread his progeny far and wide. I agree that we should try and conserve animals of this size and age but sometimes it is not parctical once hooked. I think in this modern era people do try and conserve animals of this size.

Maybe there should be a competition for really stupid comments on this forum.Yours would be a worthy first entry.

Sadly, bilfish especially large ones that have put up a long fight, seldom recover or survive the fight.

But somebody should point out the chop that his next quary (a big great white shark) is illegal to hunt in most countries.

That would be this kind of twit. If i catch a fish like that there is no way i am releasing. That fish will keep me fed for years plus blue marlin tastes awesome.

Actually, I saw an ad once (some time ago, mind you) of okes who hunt trophy animals, including the Big 5, using tranquilizer darts. Hunt as normal (walk-and-stalk, etc.), shoot the animal, wait for it to go down, take pics and then it's treated by a vet until sharp again. Shoot and release, I guess?

Isn't "release" in the spearo sense, when you chicken out and let the fish swim away with your gun? :D
