My least favourite cup and core factory ammo. Around 5 years ago I was using this setup for hunting clients.

S&B in 308(150gr) Bad results from clients shooting more likely !
That said, I have often mentioned that premium bullets can buy back some on some not so good shooting.
300Wm( 180gr), lot of gun for a basic bullet me thinks

So cheap ammo for small game is acceptable and more expensive for bigger game?

Not so cut and dried, small game is a lot easier to kill than 200 kg of Africa's survival specialists.
A buulet shot through both shoulders of a springbuck and exiting does a lot less work than a bullet trying to get through a Elands one shoulder. A cheap bullet from a small to medium caliber entering a Spring buck at a acute angle from rear behind ribs may not make into engine room, a gut shot animal, a mono bullet may actually have saved the shot.
A cheap bullet at 300 Win Mag velocity may just not with stand the impact forces and come apart without adequate penetration.
BUT !!!!!! for the question at hand, a .308 Win at a pedestrian 2400 fps a cheapish cup and core will hold together and penetration will be very good. A thing too consoder is that a really good bonded 180 gr bullet suitable for the 300 Win Mag may just be too hard for a .308 Wins velocity at 200 m

Remember hunting conditions vary. Thick stuff you dont often get a second shot, tracking needs to be good, do you have a blood dog.
The guys that hunt a lot have all these secondary measures to fix a poor shot or bullet failure.

Good advice this, and a sound reasoning.
Its just the .308 Win that I argue for average bullets being good enough, I would be talking a whole different set of reasons if question was regarding a .270 - 300 Win Mag - 7 mm Rem

I also get good accuracy from my 20" 308 with the Federal Fusion ammo in 180gr. If I do my part they shoot a bit under MOA at 100m's.
Hunted 4 animals thus far with it.
Impala at 80 m, bullet went right through on a broad side shot .
Blue Wildebeest at 120 m, bullet was recovered under the opposite skin after a broad side shot.
Blesbuck at 210 m facing me. Bullet was recovered in the backside facing the wrong way though.
Kudu Cow at 60 m broad side shot, went straight through.
