Which fire steels can be regarded as best?
The one you have with you when you need one. I must have half a dozen different ones and they all work just fine. I think having the right tinder is more critical.
You sure about that? The magnesium I got my hands on from the school chemistry store room burned rather well.
Any true magnesium obviously will, but I have seen videos of brands of which the so called magnesium does not.
Swedish fire steel. Light my fire.

I also use a BG one that works well.

Thanks Mr_Medic
Firesteel.com also seems to have good stuff, but it appears they don't ship here.
The light my fire one's ate readily available at most outdoor stores. Just be careful of cheaper chinese ones. They don't work lekker.

I recently bought some 7mm x 5m Eco Rope from Builders Express. I think it is probably jute or sisal. The rope is made of 3 strands which can be separated to give 15 m of rope for shelter building or separate a strand and fluff it up to make a birds nest for a charcloth fire or lighting with a fire steel. You can ,of course use vaseline as an extender.A lot cheaper than paracord for a multitude of tasks.
Swedish fire steel works best I find, take a dozen or so cotton balls from your wife's bathroom goodies, work Vaseline into the cotton balls so that they are nice and greasy, store in an old pill (tablet) container in your day pack.
Trust me it even burns (starts a fire) in snow or rain....
