The company that I work for handles firearm for Airlink, Safair and occasionally SAA.
Your info regarding the box for the firearm is correct (it must be hard Shel and lockable) Soft bags even if locked will not be accepted.
A very important issue is that your ammo MUST be packaged in a separate lockable hard shell box. If it is in the same container as the firearm the firearm will not be accepted.
Please do not put any ammo into your checked luggage as you and your baggage will be offloaded and you will miss your flight.
My firearm handlers are not allowed to keep/receive any ammo from passengers so if you don't have a box you will have to hand it in at the SAPS

Not just air transport,
Regulation 68.1.a of the Firearms control act:
Quote:
During transportation of firearms and ammunition by a holder of a firearmtransporter’s permit -
(a) firearms must be packed separately from ammunition, and allammunition must be removed from firearms in a safe manner, beforetransportation;
Would also think it means that breaking into just one container would not give someone immediate access to a working firearm. They need to break into 2 containers to get the firearm and ammunition, increasing the chances of detection before they are able to arm themselves.
Re: Flying to Cape Town with handgun
I think that is open to interpretation. There is a similar law in NSW gun laws, but it is accepted that if the ammo is in a locked container, that ammo container may be in the same container as the firearm.
“Packed separately” could be extended to absurdity, ie not packed in the same hold? The same vehicle / aircraft?
Not trying to change your SOPs, though. When dealing with the FCA many take approaches out of abundant caution.
Re: Flying to Cape Town with handgun
I use the metal petty cash boxes that you can buy at stationery shops.
A larger one for the pistol, and a small one for the ammo.
If memory serves, they put both your boxes into a bag, and seal the bag.

Watching with interest as I thought there were no longer any.
Re: Flying to Cape Town with handgun
Search or ask on the GOSA FB page. It has been asked a lot.
Most recently, I recall reading that Lift allows passengers to check in a firearm to go on the flight. They don’t fly to “all major” destinations in SA.
There was another one who will allow carriage of long guns (hunting toys, I guess), but not handguns. Dunno if they are still flying or which airline it was.
It’s not cheap I believe!
Re: Flying to Cape Town with handgun
Hi all
Just an update and some items to take note of:
1. According to both FlySafair and Airlink's website, only "Sporting/Hunting Firearms" are transported.
2. The requirement for ammo to be carried separately and the weight restriction on the ammo is a regulatory requirement, SACAA, IATA DG requirement and an airline has to comply with the regulatory requirement.
3.No firearms are allowed to be carried in the cabin of the aircraft and flight crew DO NOT keep them in the cockpit, again a regulatory requirement.
4. FlySafair charge is per rifle case with a maximum of 3 firearms in the case.
5. As far as I am aware, Airlink, FlySafair, and Lift currently facilitate the carriage of firearms, not sure about CemAir yet
6. I understand there are no Firearms handlers at George, and Bloem is having a challenge with their ACSA approvals, not sur about the smaller airports like Kimberly etc.
