    Default Reloading: Powder for 300 winmag

    Hi all

    I've lost trust in Somchem so want to move over to a different brand.

    What powder would anyone recommend for the 300 winmag. I'm considering Hodgdon Hybrid 100 due to cost efficiency and I've read good reviews. Now I'm wondering what about Vihtavouri N165. I'm reloading on a budget so don't necessarily want to 'try out' a couple of powders. So I'm hoping to get advice from you guys.

    I'm loading Sierra Game King 180gr but would like to try a heavier bullet as well - twist is 1:12 which I know won't be great on a heavier bullet.

    Would love to hear what powder you recommend.

    Thanks
    Jacques

    Hi Jacques,

    So I thought id share some info, and willing to assist with QuickLoad and GRT info if needed;

    Versatility;

    Generally speaking the 300 Win Mag is probably the most versatile caliber as it can be loaded from anything 110gr - 240gr.

    Sectional Density - Penetration Characteristics

    Varmint; 0.180
    Small Game 0.230
    Medium Game - 0.280
    Big Game - 0.310
    Dangerous Game ~ 0.380

    I would like to lay out some powder options and leave you to decide what you will be loading;

    200gr Hornady ELD-X

    Below Loads: All Sami Spec;

    Cartridge Overall Length:
    3.340" / 84.84mm
    MIN = PMAX Minus 25%
    MAX = PMAX Minus 15%

    Hodgdon:

    H1000
    MIN:72.5=2701 & MAX:75=2806

    H4831
    MIN:66.0=2632 & MAX:69=2753

    Hybrid 100V
    MIN:60.41=2601 & MAX:63.41=2693

    H4350
    MIN:61.0=2602 & MAX:64.08=2718

    H414
    MIN:61.1=2651 & MAX:64.00=2764

    H380
    MIN:57.2=2593 & MAX:60.0=2700

    Varget
    H4895
    MIN:54.96=2572 & MAX:57.73=2672

    Vihtavuori:

    N160
    MIN:65.00=2601 & MAX:68.00=2710

    N165
    MIN:67.53=2622 & MAX:70.24=2725

    N560
    MIN:68.0=2718 & MAX:70.75=2832

    Somchem:

    S365
    MIN:61.85=2647 & MAX:64.5=2742

    S385
    MIN:65.2=2627 & MAX:64.5=2732

    IMR:
    4350
    MIN:60.81=2600 & MAX:63.6=2704

    Regarding the 1:12 Twist;

    Gyroscopic Stability:
    1.5 = Comfortable Stable

    From the above, I would say;

    200gr Hornady ELD-X

    VV N560
    MIN:68.0=2718 & MAX:70.75=2832 (Note that this is still at Minus ~25% Max Pressure)

    If you can go to ~72gr you should be at PMAX Minus ~15% and around 2900fps - Which would equate to the similar stability of the 180gr bullet

    If you can provide me with coal and case trim to length then I can give you more comprehensive info on the loads you would like to develop :-)
