This is very true. Because there is a button to press, it gets pressed. Needed or not. I have pressed the Forward Assist on my AR a lot. But it never does anything. Its just a habit. When charging the first round from a mag I give it a bump. Why? Well, I also don't know. Because its there?

I started doing it after one time, there was a problem baboon male visiting the yard from time to time and making a nuisance and danger of himself. So I had the AR with me when he made himself a pest once more. I sneaked on him and slowly made way around a storeroom to get a clear shot. I wanted to do it quietly, so slowly charged the rifle. With the slow and controlled forward movement of the bolt to not make a noise the bolt did not close completely. I got him in my sights, squeezed the trigger, but the shot did not go off. On inspection the bolt was not closed in full and since then I started using the forward assist. With normal charging never had a problem as I keep my rifle and ammo clean.

Maybe I must concentrate on stopping the process. It actually serves no purpose.

Pick up an earlier Colt CAR 15.One with the aluminium as opposed to plastic stock and lack of forward assist and compare it to the modern equivalent. The weight difference is unbelievable.

Well, he saw me as I moved the rifle to see what the problem was and ran away. The next day he was back again to carry on with his mischief. He was old and hungry and an outcast, but really sly. This time he tried his luck too far and I presume wanted to eat at the dogs bowls. They chased him up a tree where I helped him out of his misery with a Glock 19 and a quick double tap. On inspection he had almost none existent teeth left and an abscess on one elbow. (Left or right I cannot remember.) Maybe he was on a suicide mission...

Never knew that Eugene Stoner was also convinced of the futility of the 'how to make things infinitely worse' button.
