Here's a thought... maybe mankind IS the virus?

Not necessarily. If people could curb their selfishness and direct their energy towards building a sensible and well balanced society, one could make it last for quite a while. The trouble almost never starts with peaceful folks. It usually starts with ambitious people who are actually walking over other people on their way to self-realisation.It does not matter which system one follows. Sooner or later the human nature sinks the ship and things have to start again.

The Red Queen Theory sounds like a good reason to go extinct.

Living things have to evolve to keep up and sometimes they evolve themselves in to extinction. The phenomenon's name is derived from a statement that the Red Queen made to Alice in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass in her explanation of the nature of Looking-Glass Land
Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.
That running can sometimes send a species up a dead-end street.

The chilling part is, his sentiment that "even" after WW111 man will still not learn.

1984 - George Orwell got it quiet close, but out by some years.
