    Default Powder burning silencer

    Hi

I have a .270 with an Aimsonic silencer, today doing end of season clean I noticed my silencer is been eaten / burned to such an extend the hole is visibly not round anymore.

Now the question is is this normal, is it a kak silencer or is the vihtavuori n550 / ali silencer combo a bad one. At this stage I have shot around 300-400 rounds with it.

Secondly if the powder is burning my silencer, is it not burning my barrel ?

    Thanks

Or is this normal carbon fouling ?

I would hazard that thats un-burnt propellant build up and not burn away.

Baffle erosion. Its normal in cans, the only material that can withstand it is Inconel, softer metals like aluminium are more susceptible.

If it is indeed eroosion, check which model aimzonic it is. The later models internals were updated to make them last longer.

Looks like normal ware and tare. The same happens to my muzzle break.

I contacted the guys in the USA and they said it's normal ware and tare.

When your accuracy goes, it's time to replace.

To me it looks like carbon. Maximising the pic does not help because it is very blurry.

Try to clean it off to see what is actually happening there.

I'm with DS. Erosion is usually "taking away". That looks a bit like "build up".

I tried cleaning it, ultrasonic does nothing. I did let it soak in Hoppes over night, nothing. So this morning I took a small needle file and scraped it. Definitely metal.

    Here is a better picture.

Its probably carbon build up. You will probably have the same build up in the crown of your rifle.

It becomes rock hard and can shine like metal when scratched. Soak a patch in Boretech carbon remover and cover the area for a few hours. Should come clean. Otherwise soak in Clean Green solution overnight.
