Barnaul Hunting Rifle Ammo - 7.62x51 or .308Win?
Hi All, So, the 7.62x51 vs .308Win has been discussed ad nauseum, with still no Definite outcome, or I missed the yay-nay count... I own a FAL, and would like to purchase a few boxes of Barnaul rounds.
True to form, the Ruskies are adding to the confusion by marking the box the following" 7.62x51 (.308WIN) Hunting rifle cartriges! Which is it, and is it safe to shoot from my FAL? I have run 12 rounds through her no problem....

Where did you find these rounds?
And what grain?
(Sorry slightly off topic!)

Re: Barnaul Hunting Rifle Ammo - 7.62x51 or .308Win?
Chambers marked "7.62x51" are slightly smaller in one or two dimensions, meaning that ammunition with 308 specs should rather not be fired in it.
7.62x51 ammo can usually be fired in 308 chambers.
Please do research on the question of pressure in the two "calibres". Some folks say that mil spec ammunition is hotter than hunting loads, and others say the opposite.

Re: Barnaul Hunting Rifle Ammo - 7.62x51 or .308Win?
All FAL's are 7.62 x51 even if marked 308.
The FAL can fire either just with proper 308 the gas port usually needs to be opened up. Barnaul is not usually hot ammo but I have not used the 308. On the FAL files many argue against steel ammo on the basis that the head might give way. The FAL usually has a looser headspace and the action type compounds this.
