Re: Not sure what to go for ? Semi Auto or Pump Gun.
For a semi-auto you need DSS or DH status.
If you may want to grab it in an emergency, you want it to be 106% reliable.
Cheap semis are usually not perfectly reliable. The good ones are not cheap.
On pump guns, most malfunctions are user-induced. They can be reliable, but that requires correct handling. Learn and practice the correct techniques.

Which division in your sporting association do you want to compete in? "Tactical shooting" is not very descriptive.
Comparing individual guns fitness for a purpose would be better

Just a quick correction, I don’t think that you can license a semi for DH, but rather DS. You can also get a decent semi shotgun for ~13k-17k, thinking Baretta 1301, Stoeger M3K or Mossberg JM Pro, but if you are looking for a Benelli, you’re budget will have to stretch a bit.

Also generally tactical shotguns tend to be on the shorter side 18” or less - in order to manoeuvre around tight corners, and sport shooters are generally longer for sight radius. If you really want a cool option that can fit both rolls well, maybe look at the SAIGA 12 and slap on a red dot.

If you want a pump, I can recommend a Benelli Supernova, I have one and its a pretty great shotgun, not my first choice for home defense because its got a 28” barrel, its perfect for the war on the birds though.....
Otherwise, a shorter semi auto might fill your needs properly

Oom Angus, you can. A bit more difficult than for DSS, but it is possible. Precise motivation is key. Many provinces allow a semi-auto for bird shooting if the mag is restricted to 2 rounds only. This makes it equal to a double, but with a much softer recoil impulse. There are other hunting uses for a semi shotty as well.

Pump action shotguns are great if you hanker after a good revolver or enjoy getting thumped but we have moved on since.
