No its not unsafe, I know my rifle status and will check it if uncertain, open your bolt if it worries you.
I use the tools I have.
In the karoo veld there is only one place to be, and that is lying flat as a pancake on the ground between the bossies. Very hard to range in those conditions due to the lack of elevation and the bushes that are in your way. If you stick your head up, its game over. I think this is where the range finding scopes come into their own, you range off your bi-pod and don't give your position away.
