I see them as short, medium and magnum.

    So for me medium would be 30 calibre's, 7X56, 6.5x 55mm etc.

Thanks. A 6.5 creedmore would be a short. I was looking on impactpro shop at the defiance actions and they only have medium and long which was suprising as I was trying to find one for a 6.5

Action length designations differ between manufactures.

Made to fit 223 length cases-short or mini(223,6Br etc)

    308 length-either short or medium(243, Creedmoor, 308 etc)

30-06 length will be long(30-06, 6.5x55, "normal" magnums like 300win mag

Magnum actions for 375 H&H type cases.

Further confusion comes as shorter cases can work in longer action and gunsmiths can make adjustments to make longer cases work in shorter actions(eg 375 H&H in K98 type actions), and manufacturers like Tikka make certain models in a single length, but with different bolt stops and magazine lengths.

Defiance action for 6.5CM would be a medium length

Would it not be excellent if actions matched rounds, I mean there is a bunch of room behind with my 6.5 so the stroke cycle is longer than it should be. Not that that is a problem.

I think, personally, many people confuse long actions for medium actions.
You get sort of a mini, stuff like 7.62x39 and 6.5 grendal, 223 etc.
Then you get a short action, stuff like 308win, 6.5 creed etc.
Then you get a long action, stuff like 270, 30-06 etc.
Then you get a magnum action, stuff like 300H&H, 375H&H and up.

Personally short, long and magnum would be my preferable 3 action classes.
For example my 270 and 338winmag have the exact same action, though one cartridge is called a magnum by name it’s definitely not a magnum length action.

So, I think many people are talking about a standard long action when they refer to a medium action, if we consider all manufacturers do what they want.
