Pretoria - Two policemen giving chase as four suspected robbers tried to make a getaway in the early hours of Monday, fired 12 shots during the high-speed chase, wounding two of the men and then arresting all four.

The driver, Warrant Officer Jaco Botha, had a narrow escape when one of the bullets fired at the police vehicle shattered the windscreen in front of the steering wheel. The bullet went out Botha's open window. However, it did not deter him from following the suspects, firing out his window as they sped after the robbers.

"All I could think about was to get the bastards," said Botha.

    On patrol

Botha and his partner, reservist constable Gerhard Weyers, were on patrol in Moot Street, Hermanstad, on Monday morning shortly before 04:00.

They saw a blue VW microbus standing in front of a Lewis furniture shop and saw two men running into the shop.

Botha and Weyers stopped and got out of their car.

"They spotted us and climbed back into the kombi," said Botha.

"One of them pointed a firearm at us.

"While they were driving away I shot at them."

The two policemen got back into their car and set off after the suspected robbers.

Botha said he had the suspected robbers in his sight the whole time.

While they were driving on the Mabopane highway (R80) in the direction of Soshanguve, north-west of Pretoria, Weyers shot out the tyres of the microbus.

The microbus hit a barrier along the side of the road and was forced off the road about 1km before the Brits Road off-ramp.

    Firearm found

The two suspects in the back of the microbus were shot in the neck and the chest respectively.

They were taken to the Kalafong Hospital, but are not in a serious condition. The driver and the front passenger were not hit.

The police found the suspects' firearm where they had thrown it from their vehicle in Wilhelm Street.

They also retrieved three flat screen TVs from the microbus.

"The community should see there are still those of us who do our jobs and still want to do our jobs," said Botha.

Police spokesperson Louis de Bruin said the men, all from Mamelodi in the east of Pretoria, were presumably also involved in a robbery at the same furniture shop about a month ago.

Their microbus has also been spotted during various robberies and break-ins in the area over the past three months.

The cops on the streets have absolutely nothing to do with firearm licences.
Many agree that the FCA(Firearm Confiscation Act) is a load of Sh1t.
Remember that quite a few policemen are private firearm owners and the act affects them too...

Totally uncalled for and irrelevent to this thread. WO Botha was almost killed doing his job. Give it a rest.
