No, they ban and shadow ban conservatives so it's not just a collection of random opinions.

What you are asking for is either a return to that doctrine, or a stronger public broadcaster. Which, ironically, is a socialist ideal

No, the Fairness Doctrine is very different from BANNING and shadow banning users on platforms like Twitter and Facebook and Amazon refusing to host Parler. The FD was about having balanced reporting, very different from what you are talking about and what is happening now like banning the president of the United States for ridiculous reasons.

The FD never even considered stuff like the internet and social media platforms.

I’ve read their entire layout of rules, policy and even the helpful guidelines. They are pretty clear about who or what gets banned, blocked etc. We get to choose if we want to use.

So now we do have media on the internet, do you support it being re instated?

No. But even if it was reinstated it wouldn't affect social media like Facebook and Twitter as we know it, it would have to be rewritten to include them. They say they don't deliver news but rather are a platform for the opinions of others.

You haven't commented on Parler yet, do you think it right that Amazon just stopped hosting them for ad hoc reasoning.

I lost all hope when I read this part. I literally face-palmed.
The article said that for some it looked like a coordinated attempt, not that it was. Who knows? IMO its just groupthink, or maybe even fear of backlash. Company A bans something, then company B thinks, oh shit, before we have a mob trying to break our doors down, lets do the same.

The problem with media and social media is that they are both echo chambers for your own biases, unless you follow both left and right sources of information. Take the US election fraud debacle for example. One side is absolutely convinced there was no fraud, and the other absolutely convinced there was, and I would put money on it, that it comes down to where you get your news from.

News should just state facts, from both sides of the issue and let readers/listeners make up their own minds.

To be honest, when I first heard about Parler I though it sounded like a dating site for cousins, so I never joined.

I think Amazon issued some statement, never read the whole thing. Again, it’s their right. In the USA , the accountability of an organisation is only to their shareholders. The concept of a broader accountability to society, stakeholders, etc as demonstrated in Scandinavian countries, for example, doesn’t exit.

    It’s pure free-market

    Really? A collection of opinions?

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

Do you know that the collection of opinions are only what they approve? Hence the echo chamber you talk of.

You do know they are removing people for having a different opinion?

It's not free market when a few social media giants become the modern day equivalent of the public square. They have become so big that without them people are silenced and specific agendas/narratives are pushed, despite them saying that they merely serve as a platform for opinions. When they silence only certain views then they cease to become that platform for opinions and become a pusher of a narrative, which they can be held liable for. But they don't want that either. They want their cake and to eat it too.

They have become monopolies, and those are illegal.
