Right, so off the bat... I know NOTHING about knives. I've never been a huge fan of having them around, but lately they have been growing on me (since I joined this site, surprisingly enough), and I realized I am finding more and more uses for my trusty ol' Leatherman Wave, but...

Today, bored out of my skull, I wandered in to Sharp Edge in Sandton City and wandered out with my first "real" knife, and at a good price too (I think...I don't know...they might have robbed me...but I wouldn't know better):

Now like I said, I am not very well educated when it comes to knives, but I really liked this one when I saw it. Now granted, it is by no means the most expensive or the best one around, but it just felt right in my hand. It is a tad bigger than I would have liked, but in terms of weight you don't even feel it.

Being a pain in the backside when it comes to detail and quality, I inspected every milimeter of it before taking it, and all is good. There is one or two spots on the ends where you can notice a little bit of machining, but nothing so bad that it will spoil it. I opted for a non-serrated blade, since I have never really been a huge fan of serrations on a blade, albeit only from an aesthetic point of view.

The belt clip is very sturdy, and can be mounted on either side and either end of the knife. There are no bells or whistles, and it is basically just the knife in the box. Very sharp out of the box, and a breeze to open and close.

I guess now I just need to learn to use it properly

It is a good quality knife for the price. You cant go wrong with Spyderco, any of their models are researched extensively by the Spyderco team.

Spyderco has been credited as the first company to use ambidextrous opening (the hole), serrated edge and pocket clip on a pocket knife.

The tooling marks is minor because Spyderco really has great quality control on their products. If you want knives without tooling marks etc you are going to start paying WAY more since manufacturing everything has to be slowed down to inspect every piece. Therefore, more labor intensive.

The most important is that you took the knife that appealed to you.

i imported one for my dad and brother as gisfts along with my ZT200, the tenacious cost $35+taxes,transport etc, landing it here was probably around R430...so i think R545 is a good deal and you will have local backup. great knives,congrats on yours!

It's a brilliant knife for the money you pay and one that I recommend to new students to check out when they ask what they should buy. I ended up passing my one onto my cuz when he got back from the UK and I still miss it!

I saw a Tenacious in Trappers today...it was marked down from R900 to R750. And here I thought it was worth buying

Luckily I didn't buy it!

@Haruhi : It is definately worth the buy, but ya, the R545- vs. R750- price tag is a big difference.
When I'm in Sandton again I'll let you know, and if the price is still the same I will forward you one if you want.

I love the knife - I was planning on getting a Spyderco in the near future.
It just shows that I need to shop around a bit before actually buying! :to:

The only thing I dislike about it (and it's nothing about the knife itself), is that the top of the belt clip sits very low, i.e. when you have it tucket in your waistband or pocket, the end sticks out a good centimeter or so.

Other than that it is really nice.
