Default 40 S&W and Licence for Dedicated Status

    Good day everyone

I plan to license a 40 S&W handgun under dedicated sport shooting.
I will have dedicated sport status with NHSA to support my application.

However, I have only shot with 9mm and smaller handguns.
If I include copies of some of my NHSA activities / targets in my application - CFR will clearly see that I only have experience with 9mm.

Could this be a problem for my 40 S&W application under dedicated sport?
I just want to be 100% sure.

    Thanks in advance

    Properly motivated SAPS wouldn't care.

According to the legal FCA definition, a handgun is a firearm that can be held and discharged with one hand. No mentions about the size, caliber or features.

Shouldn't be a problem. You're demonstrating that you are a dedicated sports shooter and that the 40 S&W is the next handgun you need to continue with the sport shooting

Maybe just reference IPSC or other sporting associations that list 40 S&W handguns as part of their approved sporting handgun list in the motivation. If you want added peace of mind, hire one for 30 minutes/use a friend's at a range and shoot an NHSA target - but doesn't seem necessary based on the above comments.

    Hi Carter Brink.

As a fellow member of the NHSA, it important to state that the NHSA distinguishes between calibres and handgun dimensions for their postal shoots and the Annual National Competition.

Attach your previous scores reports, although not a requirement, if you like.

Lastly, state what category the 40 S&W qualifies for as per NHSA classification.

If you read between the lines here, you may discover that you can apply for more than one 40 S&W handgun, for different categories.

    Good luck.

Dont mention IPSC unless you have dedicated status with SAPSA

True, NHSA has it's own list of calibres for postal:

    The Centre-Fire 5-Shot Circle Target Exercise (Calibres from .22 to .38 Spec, 357 Mag and 40 S&W, 44 Mag & 45ACP up to .50 Cal.).
