T, my post is purely questioning - in pursuit of the "know".
Why, what are your definite pointers that this is a old animal?
To me he looks old, but yea , hard times can do that.
He is has scars and callouses? Again time and conditions could be cause.
He is thin, drought also does that.
What is old in regard to a wild W/Hog?
If I had seen this hog I would have said to Cody, "Gees there is a old pig" and then have said "I wonder if its just not a bit starved"
So if you do not mind, why do you say thats a old pig and also what age would you put it.
Teeth do not look old?, (nothing to do with size).
I would have guessed that pig (after initial "its old" ) at 7/8 year old.

Re: Old Boar.
treeman. To be honest, its a guess, but an educated guess. I see warthog everyday, dozens of them. I very rarely see hogs that are as thin as this one. The grazing on the reserve is good, we've had more rain this November than we've had in the 5 previous Novembers. There are patches of fresh green "kweek" everywhere. That is the only reason I did not shoot him, thinking he might pick up condition now after the rains started. Also, while thin and scarred, he looked fairly healthy, he moved with purpose. I was hoping that he would pick up condition and have another year, most probably his last year. And yes, it was an unscientific and emotional decision. Warthog can reach an age of twelve or even older, I'm not sure how old this guy is but he is plenty old. I shot an even older boar a week ago, he was emaciated and did not even bother to try to escape, he weighed little more than half of what a mature boar normally weighs, just skin and bone.
