Getting hunting rifle from SA to New Zealand
Hi there,
I live in New Zealand. My grandfather left each of his grandsons a rifle that are registered in SA to my brother. He is about to give them away to a collector because he has moved to the Isle Of Man. Is there any way/ could anyone help me get one or more from SA to NZ?
Some details:
1. I am an NZ resident.
2. Rifles are 9mm Mauser, 7mm, .308 and a .79 (I think)
3. My brother is currently in IOM and rifles are in a safe in SA
4. I should have an NZ firearms license shortly
5. I'd like to get 1 hopefully 2 of the rifles (7mm and 9mm) to NZ and willing to give away the rest to someone who could help.
I have loved and cared for these rifles my whole life so desperate to be able to keep at least one. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Dawie

Re: Getting hunting rifle from SA to New Zealand
Dawie, to the best of my knowledge it is not easy, but doable and costly.
The biggest question of all is their current licensing status: do they still have valid licenses, or not? If the licenses are about to expire, one would have to either renew them, or get them on someone's name. Then one can start the process to export them.
The amnesty has lengthened any firearms process, so you would have to be very patient.

Most of the expats in Aus an NZ just took their reloading equipment and purchased new rifles. It is going to be very costly, lengthy time and frustrating to export.

Re: Getting hunting rifle from SA to New Zealand
I addressed the question to a LGS employee regarding exportation and his honest answer was "Never. Way too much of a headache"
