I so wanted to do that as well.

Now that I have remembered this, i think I should try find that story for my boy.

That would be an excellent thing to do. What parents never realize that it is the small things that make a difference.

My father gave me a book when I was 5 about Kit Carson.

Then your son will want to build his own rifle.
I built and use this one. It is a .54 Hawken.

You can hunt anything in North America with it. Something about casting your own bullets and making your own black power is special.

Did SA have any equivelent to mountain men explorers ? Maybe the early Dutch?

I made black powder in quantity before turning 16. Mine was just that - black powder, it burnt rather well, but was nothing like the stuff used to propel bullets. It is amazing what was available through books.
We set my room alight, blew the out room door off an managed to burn the washing line down which included the hedge and the fence. The other half of my research team is now an international chemical engineer - Rolf Breytenbach

Ya, perhaps keep yourself busy during your electricity lock down - busy and warm.

Again my sympathy with the people in Texas.1 million people without power. I see that most of the factories. fuel plants, an other shops have closed down. Water is a problem because there is no electricity to power the pumps.
    Now the blame game starts

I stand to be corrected on how many people in Texas are affected by the adverse conditions

    Hi Krieger.
You asking about mountain men/explorers in this country?
Absolutely, while the states expanded from east to west by way of wagon trains , we had expansion from south to north by way of ox drawn wagons.
There were many similarities in the way of life and the struggle for survival between the 2 countries.
Read up / google south africa voortrekkers. Voortrekkers is an afrikaans name given to our early pioneers which would lose too much in translation. Voor..meaning ahead/in front and trekker meaning traveler.

voortrekkers would have the same meaning as our pioneers. They went from east to west by horseback and wagon. Brave and tough people trekking into the unknown.
