Advice on storage of hunting rifles please..
Hi there,
I've recently moved to Blouberg, pretty close to the beach and everything that goes with it (moisture etc.) and I want to avoid any damages to the rifles - rust/moisture in stock etc.
What would be the best way to store my rifles in the safe?
Herman Jonker states in his book "Kennis vir die jagter" to never store a rifle in it's bag. Is that critical? I also read about "sillica gel/tablets" (not sure about spelling).
Any advice on this matter would be appreciated, Cheers

Re: Advice on storage of hunting rifles please..
I stay in Durbanville, not far from you. I store my 3 rifles in their bags in the safe without any problems. I must admit that my rifles are not stored for longer than 14 days at the most. It's either a hunt over weekends or the shooting range when I'm not on a hunt. I have a few bags of sillica gel in my save, maybe that helps. I also clean my rifles with Boretech eliminator and leave a thin layer on the barrels which I remove just before shooting.

I read some of an older article on gun safes and from what I remember some of the guys installed either small extractor fans and or light bulbs inside the safe. I would imagine that the light bulb be easier to achieve.
[BLouberg hey? Are you doing any training at the moment? We do Amok in Table View] Pm me if you are keen.

You can get a small de-humidifier that is made for this purpose. I think I saw one at Kalahari Arms.

Do you guys get the Goldenrods in SA? It's like a small longish heating element, it works like a charm for rust prevention.
DO NOT store a firearm in a bag for long periods of time.

RICE!!! this is a home remedy, a handful of rice in a dish or bowl inside your safe.
