Tanning a Hide - Hair On
I thought I would gve this a bash this season and here is the process I'm following:
- Flesh out the skin – either fleshing knife & beam or high pressure hose
- Salt the hide or freeze the hide - can store now if needs be until ready to proceed
- Soak the skin (if salted) and squeeze the hide max 2 hours until soft
- Pickle the skin – salt, water, white vinegar (2 litres water, 2 litres vinegar, 1kg salt), need about 18 litres of solution – for 3 days stirring frequently
- Neutralise the skin – 2 cup baking soda to 18 litres water for 40 minutes
- Rinse in clean water & dish soap and the rinse clean water and towel dry
- Oil the skin – equal parts neats foot oil (100g) and warm water (100g) + ammonia (28g) – apply in 2 coats about 1 hour apart
- Cover in plastic sheet overnight to “cure”
- Stretch – over wooden beam to soften
Any input or tips that would be useful? Where does one buy ammonia from?

My process is based on the above links.

Ammonia from a supermarket. Never tried this myself but sounds interesting.

Re: Tanning a Hide - Hair On
My brother in law just used raw linseed oil on a sheepskin, then washed clean. Said it came out well. Haven't tried it myself though
