    Default So what happened here?

Can anyone add some context? Anyone that is aware of the backstory? Except for the fact that he should have worn safety glasses of course...

One thing is certain, a valuable lesson about shooting with eye protection has been learned.

Other than the striker assembly blowing out the back it looks to be like a fairly typical case failure result. As to the cause of the failure, who knows, but I would speculate that was a significantly overcharged load.

To me this would require a blocked barrel, total failure for gas's to escape.

    Probably a overcharged case.

Looks to me like a design flaw.
I do not think it is possible for that amount of gas pressure and volume to get through the firing pin hole in the breach face.

Combination of overcharged load and a barrel obstruction? Maybe a Squib in the pipe?

Path of least resistance. The Mauser amongst others has aspects of the bolt designed to minimize gas reaching the shooter through the firing pin hole.

That's my point, everything else held together long enough for the easiest gas escape route to blow out a primer, pressurize the striker channel and propel the entire striker assembly through the retaining plate?
That's a design flaw if I have ever seen one.

Could this happen to a pistol made of steel / metal only ?

    Compressed load
