    Default Bug identification

Wondering if anyone here is good at identifying bugs and can help me.

We recently started seeing these guys around out kitchen. They dont really bother us and not sure if it is coincidence but since they arrived we seem to be getting less flies.

Their numbers are starting to inclrease and since I cant identify them I am unsure if they are desirable or not (ie will they eat all the wood in the house, kill the kids or poison the dogs). This one meassures about 15mm in length.

Do they appear at night time? It almost looks like a horse fly. (perdevlieg)

They are in our kitchen all day and and night.

They don't land on food like the normal flies do. Really don't know what they eat

Probably worth mentioning that this is in durban (about 1km from coast)

Aaah thanks for that. A quick google found this interesting pdf:
    http://www.arc.agric.za/arc-ppri/Fac...%20-%20BSF.pdf

This kind of fits the evidence here (less flies) as well as the fact that we have a compost bin about 3m away from our kitchen window.

Ok then I will refrain from killing them as they seem quite beneficial.
