Re-licencing from Abroad (covid 19)
Hi is it possible to re-license a Handgun from abroad, things for me have changed due to covid-19 and i have been unable to return to SA?

I would say no as the DFOs require the applicant to submit. However don't panic as, when you arrive back in SA, you can renew and use the lockdown as your reason for not renewing in time. We have had guarantees that this would constitute a good enough reason, provided your passport can back it up.

I would certainly try it, if they say no because they want the applicant available in person then you have the necessary grounds for a delayed application. Have a friend bring a laptop for a zoom call.

They need fingerprint on application, if you can get around that, worth a shot. At least you'll now have written evidence of your attempt to renew and due to covid, could not do it in person. They do allow late application if abroad.

I would suggest that you speak to an attorney who specialises in this area of the law. Something may be done through a special power of attorney. Having an attorney submitted an affidavit on your behalf will at least demonstrate that you have not been supine about the whole thing.
