Default Dude almost ends himself with bad 50Cal ammo

Scott from Kentucky Ballistics almost gets shifted off this mortal coil. A lot of lessons to be learnt here.

So glad Scott made it through, he's one of the good guys.

What would cause ammunition to do this assuming it was not tampered with?

Videos like this makes me scared of shooting rifles. I watched a ton of these when I first got my .30-06 and I was really skittish shooting the first few rounds with that rifle. It's terrible.

    Watched it last night.

    1. Dont like that screw-on "bolt/receiver"
    2. The Aussies made a modern Enfield action in 308 and tested it to 110K psi before the extractor broke off. Action had not changed dimensionally.
    3. If that screw cap let go at 85K psi then it is a weak design.

Agreed. On AR15.com discussion, someone posted a close up pic of the "stripped threads", looks like only 4-5 threads on the rear of the breech plug.

I'm guessing that the cap version is quite a bit cheaper than a bolt rifle?
Scott has other 50 Cals so just bad luck that he chose the Serbu on the day.

Agreed! I would not be comfortable shooting any caliber in a firearm that assembles like a Potato-gun.

I think the big issue here is that he wasn't sure where the ammo came from, how old it was etc. Shooting unknown ammo is the biggest takeaway from this to me.

Meh. Cheap POS piece of plumbing instead of a proper gun is what caused this.

From Max safe 60000psi to shearing the threads of the chamber cap at 85000psi is NOT a helluva lot of safety margin.

Also... you can see how the polymer sabot was disintegrating (probably from long-term exposure to the nitro propellant) by how wildly inaccurate the rifle was shooting prior to boom. I suspect that the projectile may have turned sideways in the barrel. But the threads shearing at just over 30% overpressure is the real problem.

There is a reason that Truvelo builds their actions like brick shithouses.
