There is a misconception that white, often referred to as ivory, tips are an indicator of age. This is not true, I have seen many young (2-3 year old) kudu bulls with impressively long ivory tips while these bulls were still 4 - 5 years away from being trophy bulls. With the spiral horned antelope horn shape is an accurate indicator of age.

That is the misconception I had. Thank you for explaining it nicely. This is probably due to said misconception, but the ivory tips makes a nice trophy/presentation.
I few years ago I was fortunate to hunt an “odd” nyala bull. One horn was perfect and probably reasonably impressive, the other grew strange and looks like it broke of at some stage as well. But what a spectacular animal it was.
