Re: Pistol sights install
Gunsmith =/= Pistolsmith.
Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:
But I know one thing that never dies,
the glory of the great dead.

Re: Pistol sights install
This is my EDC gun and yes, I want to use it for Standard Pistol division as well, hence the sights. So no, not a safe queen but still, I guess I just expected more from "professionals". Their usual guy, who have doen work for me was not there, that should have been a sign...
But as SSP mentioned, there's a difference between a gunsmith and a pistolsmith. Lesson learnt. Just because they sell any handgun available in SA doesn't mean the Smith there is a specialist in pistols.

Generally, I say if you want it done properly, then you do it yourself. Learn the skills and get the tools.

Re: Pistol sights install
Have you at least checked if the gun shoots Zero? Has it been zero'ed by the "professional"? Because if thats how they fit a sight then I doubt that they zero'ed it perfectly either...

Re: Pistol sights install
You would think that removing and putting on a rear sight would be one of the basic skills any gunsmith would have, and doing so without any scratches or marks to the gun or sight. Respecting the customer and so his property should be high up there on any gunsmith's list of priorities.

Re: Pistol sights install
The installation and damage is unacceptable.
The damage is now there and a permanent feature unfortunately, what's done is done.
How it can be rectified is the question to now ask.
Whether you paid for the physical installation or not, you paid for new sights when buying them there at the same shop and ultimately got more than you bargained for.
I known a website or 2 locally state that "the new sights need to be installed by a qualified gunsmith", this is obviously not what you got.
Call in and speak to the higher powers that be in the particular shop to discuss the issue and surface damage you now sit with.
Besides the scratches through the slides finish and into the metal on your slide from using the unprotected metal faced jaws of the vice directly onto your slide, the mickey mouse "gunsmith" also damaged and bent your "new" front sight whilst installing.
It is bent or more specifically mangled from the punch used.
The rear sight fared better but still has light impact marks.
All could have been prevented.
I would demand a new front sight be installed and ask what they propose as to how the damage to the finish on the slide gets repaired.
The factory finish is now permanently damaged, no touch up with cold blue will be acceptable as it will always be visible.
It would be best for a full slide refinish for an acceptable result.
Maybe now is the time to have it done at their cost if you were considering ceracote...?
Mention the compounding issue in that you're not locally based and needed to travel a distance to the shop.

Re: Pistol sights install
Totally unacceptable if you ask me...
I have replaced several sights on several firearms and never left any marking.
With a piecve of leather in the vice and a brass or plastic punch, a bit of care and some filing if necessary and the job is done.
This looks like a rushed job by an amateur, NOT a professional gunsmith!
Yes, time to complain...

Re: Pistol sights install
this isn't great. I would call then shop and find out how they can fix it. If they aren't prepared to help then name and shame. If this was done to yours then it's likely that this will be done again, possibly worse, to someone else's
