Default Gunstock cleaner and oil ?

    Hi all.

What do you guys use to clean a wooden gunstock, want to clean off old gunk and oil but not ruin the colour or stain.

And which brand/type of oil could I use to treat the stock afterward ?

If it is not covered in some varnish or lacquer (as in wood only) you could do what Snooker players do to keep their pool / snooker que looking good and smooth. It sounds horrible but I've cleaned wood this way and "restored" a really ugly scratched stock using this method. As well as an old wooden chest.

You get the oldest / softest / worn out piece of green scouring sponge from the kitchen. And then gently rub (as you would with sanding paper) the wooden surface. Evenly, not just in one spot. It buffs off old gunk and smoothes the surface of the wood.

And when you are done you can just oil it by rubbing wood oil on it.

Don't buy new scourers sold in the hardware store (unless you are sanding down a stock). Use an old soft kitchen version.

Don't do this on varnished wood, unless you want to remove the varnish.
